I recently found out how to get a Google Wave invitation from an awesome post (and linked tutorial by San Srid) in Steve Pavlina’s forums (thanks guys!). The process went so smoothly for me, I thought I’d share whatever I can about it. Google Wave rocks, so do invitations, and so does Steve Pavlina’s forums. Google Wave is a potential massive evolution for the internet
Often when Google releases a new product, they release it as a Beta, and invite only. These invites are often very coveted, tons of people are dying to try google’s latest creation.
Fortunately, they are also very plentiful. Most people who are given invites by google have the option and opportunity to invite others, and they often have so many that they are hunting around for people who are interested.
Now I’m going to tell you how to get an invite for google wave. There are many ways, and I’ll tell you a few. One way is using Twitter. Twitter’s real-time up to the minute tweets about invitations are the favourite choice for a lot of people. I’ll try and keep it simple for people who may be new to twitter, though if you’re interested in Google Wave, it’s fairly likely you’re at least passingly familiar with Twitter.
1: If you don’t already have a Twitter account, get one, the sign up process is extremely easy on twitter.com.
2: Once you have an account and you’re logged in, search twitter for “google wave invitations” or click the link provided here: http://twitter.com/#search?q=google%20wave.
3: Twitter will display a bunch of search results, all of whom are talking about Google Wave. Glance through them and when you find someone who is offering some of their many invitations, click on the person’s name.
4: Twitter.com will show you the profile page and all the ‘tweets’ from the person you clicked on. We’ll call him ‘John.’ It’s proper etiquette to follow John’s tweets before approaching him for an invitation, but it’s not absolutely necessary. For this tutorial, we recommend clicking the ‘Follow’ button under John’s picture on his profile page.
5: So you’re following John. Now you need to write him directly and ask for an invitation. You can do this by clicking on “direct message” on the right side of John’s profile or you can do this by using your own profile page and tweeting at John (simply write @John in your tweet box, on your profile page, and then write "please give me a google wave invite! This is my email YourName@yourdomain.com").
6: At this point you can stop, have faith that your request will be answered and wait for an incoming google wave invitation. (Nice!) Or if you feel that this response might take too long, or you’d like to increase your chances, you can repeat steps 3-5 for other search results and then wait for a bunch of invitations to stream into your inbox. It’s as simple as that.
There are a couple other ways, we will go over very quickly, if you hang around on forums, for example stevepavlina.com/forums/ there are often people chit-chatting in them about Google Wave and their excess invitations and simply responding to those threads in a similar manner to the above process can net you some sweet invites. Another way is through other social networking sites such as Facebook or Myspace.
P.S. There’s always clicking the “Request An Invitation” link at the bottom of wave.google.com. It’s on wave.google.com but people just want an invite from a friend! They don’t want to go there, but it’s funny because when you click on the invite it takes you there anyways! You can’t really avoid it.
