Ever heard sentences like this?
“I don’t have time, I have to work.”
“If only work was this fun.”
“I’ll play with the kids after I work.”
Lots of people separate work and play
which of course, is fine. Generally though, I like to encourage people to do what they’re passionate about, and one of the biggest benefits that comes from this, is that work begins to feel more and more like play. Children often have this down pat, and many times in life we can observe them, in even the most mundane chore, having a blast and turning it into some kind of game.
I tell everyone that everything I do is play; I tell them that even if they hear the word ‘work’ come out of my mouth, all I really mean is ‘play.’
A great example of this idea in action is Tori Mongrain’s Fun Yoga! She makes yoga fun
She gets people bending their bodies in surreal ways they often wouldn’t consider, and everyone is happy while doing it. Even the video we made for her is fun, she didn’t make a huge elaborate production, or worry about anything, she just played around with different interesting yoga-type things and filmed it candidly. There’s even a clip of her using the ‘yoga-phone,’ Maxwell Smart style. So, for probably the least-serious yoga-video you’ll ever see, take a look, it’s fun!
It’s easy for her; because Tori’s passionate about yoga, she makes her work, her play. They are the same. She also sells artwork, and loves painting, again, making her work into play. It’s really a beautiful concept, and well worth considering, in my humble opinion.
If you’re stuck in a miserable job you just can’t see as play, it’s very likely a good sign that deep-down, you want to be pursuing something you’re far more passionate about, and *any* steps towards that goal will likely have you feeling better.
