Do you think you have strengths and weaknesses? You might. Do you think you need to fix or improve your ‘weak’ areas? You might. Before you do, let me offer you an alternative solution.

Turn your strengths into super-strengths.

Imagine all your strengths and weaknesses are like candles. Each one burns brighter the stronger it is.

For example, if you’re really good at dance, then that would be a very bright flame. If you’re not-so-hot at accounting, that would be a very dim flame.

You could go through your life trying to find every dim flame and brighten it to a decent level through hard work and discipline, until you’re "pretty good at most things". Be aware though, that this is a recipe for mediocrity.

Almost every artist I talk to thinks that they know their fans, but how do they know? Did they study? Profile their common buyers? How much consicous-thoughtwent into understanding their fans. Did they sit down one day and figure it out? Did they think about it every day on the bus? Because in my experience… most artists have done NONE of these things. Most artists ASSUME they know their fans, but assumptions are a very double-edged sword.

When someone asks you questions about your art, are you able to deliver a clear, powerful, connecting response?

If you’re like most artists the answer is… not even close.

You might mumble something or ramble a long paragraph about ‘expression.’ You might give a vague general answer like: "Its… abstract." You might avoid the question entirely. Whatever the case, another human being is trying to connect with you, they want you to give them some ammo to tell their friends. They want to tell people about this cool artist they met, but they’re not gonna do it if they don’t have clear details to share.
